Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Kunshan Sun Island emerges from a virtual wasteland, bare of top soil and vegetation. Destructive commercial enterprises such as brick making were the culprits. Today's lush golf course is a commendable testament to Kunshan Sun Island's creative restoration. Kunshan Sun Island is in terms of area the largest of Sun Island's four golf courses. The course is overly dominated by bunkers. Twelve or more bunkers per hole are not uncommon. Some are really huge and intimidating, yet picturesque to an extent as to be seducing to both the professional and novice. Water hazards are not as numerous or huge in size compared to Shanghai Sun Island, but they are nevertheless well positioned and challenging. The really serious drawback for the time being is absence of full grown trees, which have all been individually planted and nurtured. On the plus side, the choice of trees and positioning will eventually go a long way to improving the overall landscaping.
