Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand, located about 720 kilometers north of Bangkok. It is a beautiful ancient city, also known as the "Rose of the North". It was built in 1296 by Mengrai, the first king of the Lanna Dynasty, as the new capital on the banks of the Ping River and named "New City" in Northern Thai.

Since then, as the center of the region, the city has nurtured a unique Northern Thai culture and tradition known as "Lanna Culture" in areas such as architecture, Buddhist style, language, cuisine and crafts. To this day, the city is still famous for its crafts, and in recent years it has become a center of Thai art based on this tradition.

The surrounding area is a lush mountainous area with continuous peaks, including Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon. Since the average temperature in the dry season (November to January) is about 25°C, it is more comfortable than the plains, so November and December are undoubtedly the best time to play golf.

The Chiang Mai Yee Peng Festival is held in November, and you can experience the unique charm of Chiang Mai during the festival. Temple tours and traditional handicraft making activities are available all year round.

2. Transportation: Although there are tuk-tuks, Songtaew (shared taxis converted from the back seats of pickup trucks) are the main means of transportation for ordinary people in Chiang Mai. Baigao's Chiang Mai golf tour package includes full-time charter use, which is very convenient.

3. Specialties: Traditional handicrafts such as Thai silk, Thai cotton cloth, wood carvings, lacquerware, ceramics and silverware

4. Specialties: Steamed chicken, eggplant and vanilla in banana leaves; coconut milk curry soup noodles; spicy Sai Ua (also known as Chiang Mai sausage); Cape Moo, these are popular northern Thai delicacies in restaurants and stalls in Chiang Mai. You can taste northern food in restaurants and roadside stalls in Chiang Mai. Many dishes are light in flavor, so even people who don't like spicy food can enjoy them.

If you want to try traditional local food, Kantok is the best place to go. This serving method, which consists of a round plate (kantok) and several small bowls filled with foods such as Nam Prik Oon, Gaeng Hanley and sticky rice, originated from the Lanna Dynasty when nobles would entertain guests here. It is also a great place to enjoy food while watching traditional dance performances. Restaurants where tourists can dine while watching traditional dances are also popular. Chiang Mai's largest market, Warorot Market, sells a variety of unique northern Thai specialties, including mushrooms, royal ferns, chestnuts, persimmons, bamboo shoots, river prawns and fish.

Coffee cultivation in the mountains of northern Thailand began as a royal project and has now flourished to become one of the premier coffee growing regions in Thailand.

5. Featured Events: Chiang Mai hosts various festivals throughout the year. The most lively of these is Songkran, which celebrates the Thai Lunar New Year. It is said to have originated from the monks sprinkling water in temples to purify themselves during the New Year, hence the name "Water Sprinkling Festival". Chiang Mai's Songkran Festival is particularly famous for its parades and the large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Meanwhile, the Loi Krathong Festival in November is a festival where lanterns are released on the river to thank the river god. In addition to flower lanterns, Chiang Mai is also famous for its handmade Kom Loei paper lanterns, which people release into the night sky to express their wishes to the Buddha in the sky. The lanterns floating on the river, the dancing Kom Loei in the night sky, and countless colored lights make for a dreamy festival night, a unique and beautiful memory of your trip.

The Flower Festival is also a unique festival in Chiang Mai, where people take advantage of Chiang Mai's cool climate to cultivate orchids, roses and other flowers, decorating the entire city with colorful flowers.

Recommended Chiang Mai sightseeing

* Chiang Mai Old Town

The old town is surrounded by a nearly square moat and a 1.5-kilometer-circle wall, and is dotted with many historic temples. Wat Phrasin is the largest and most prestigious temple, built in 1345 by King Payu, the fifth king of the Lanna Dynasty, to house the remains of his father. The murals in Rai Kham Chapel vividly depict the life of the people and the royal palace during the Lanna Dynasty and are known as masterpieces of traditional northern Thai art.

Located in the center of the old town, Wat Chedi Luang is a temple with a large (Luang) Chedi, which, as the name suggests, was 80 meters high when it was built. The existing pagoda and its 60-meter-high platform give a sense of the grandeur of this temple, while Wat Mun Gun Khong, a few minutes' walk from Wat Phrasin, is known as the representative building of the Lanna Dynasty. Its wooden main hall is small but beautifully decorated, with ornately decorated pillars and a beautifully sloping roof. It is known as the representative building of the Lanna Dynasty.

* Wat Suthep

The kings of the Lanna Dynasty built many temples outside the city walls. Wat Suthep, located on the top of Suthep Mountain at an altitude of 1,080 meters in the northwest of the ancient city, is one of them. It is said that a trip to Chiang Mai is not complete without visiting this temple. The temple has a 22-meter-high golden stupa and an observation deck from which you can overlook the entire Chiang Mai.

Wat Umorn, located at the foot of Suthep Mountain, is famous for its brick tunnel (umorn) where monks meditate. Located near the Nimanhaemin area, Wat Jet Yot is also known as Wat Pho Taram (Bodhi Temple) because of the huge Bodhi tree that stands within the temple grounds. Built in 1456 by the 11th King Thilokarat, the temple retains the unique structure of seven meditation halls on a square platform.

* National Parks

On the outskirts of Chiang Mai is a mountainous area rich in nature, with numerous peaks, including Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon (2,565 meters above sea level). Trekking in these areas offers visitors a wealth of opportunities for activities such as walking through dense forests, bathing in waterfalls, observing the beautiful and colorful birds and wildflowers, or trying elephant riding and rafting.

Another unique northern experience is staying in a hill tribe village, such as Doi Ang Khan and Huai Nam Dang National Parks, where you can experience the life of the Hmong and Karen people. Staying in a stilt house made of woven bamboo, tasting the traditional cuisine of the hill tribes, or watching the women weaving are rare opportunities to experience the simple life of the village without electricity or running water. One-day tours and three-day and two-night tours are popular.
